As the demand for smoother and more reliable ice surfaces increased, Frank Zamboni, the founder of the Zamboni Ice Company, was on a quest to perfect his ice resurfacing machine. At that time, the Zamboni ice resurfacers were still in the developmental stages. Frank needed a robust platform that could handle the heavy equipment and maintain steady performance in cold conditions. Enter the Jeep.
The Jeep Connection
Jeep vehicles, specifically the CJ-3B and CJ-5 models, were chosen by the Zamboni Company as the base for their early ice resurfacers. These Jeeps were rugged and reliable. Plus, they also offered the necessary power and maneuverability required for the meticulous task of ice resurfacing.
From 1950 to 1964, the Zamboni machines were quite literally built on top of these Jeeps. The vehicles were equipped with the resurfacing equipment needed to shave, wash, and squeegee the ice, all while collecting the shavings into a tank. This was a revolutionary process invented by Frank Zamboni himself. This innovation provided a much-needed solution to the laborious and time-consuming task of manually resurfacing ice rinks, making it quicker and more efficient.
Transition to Specialized Machines
The collaboration between Jeep and Zamboni lasted until 1964, when the Zamboni Company started designing and constructing ice resurfacers with their own original chassis.
